Charlotte, N.C. - Charlotte track and field head coach Robert Olesen announced the addition of four strong high school performers to the track and field teams in the early National Letter of Intent signing period. Ebonie Cunningham, Yvonna Hines and Nicole Quauliana will join the women's team and Darius Law will add to the men's roster for the 2007-08 season.
Ebonie Cunningham ran for Southeast Raleigh in high school and is the defending North Carolina State 4A champion in the 400m Dash. Her time of 54.56 ranked her first in North Carolina and placed her on the National High School Elite list (www.dyestat.com) last spring. She earned High School All-American status early in the summer after placing fifth in the 400m at the Nike Outdoor National meet in Greensboro, N.C. Ebonie was also ranked second in the state in 2006 in the 200m dash, with a personal best time of 24.15 and is coached by Eddie Harden.
"Ebonie will help continue the tremendous success achieved by our 200m and 400m sprinters and has the potential to succeed at the highest levels of collegiate competition," said Niners' sprint coach Tim Hall.
Yvonna Hines earned runner up honors in the North Carolina 3A state 400m dash last spring running for Northeast Guilford in Greensboro, N.C. Yvonna raced to a 57.96 in the finals of the state meet and achieved a 57.86 personal best over the course of the season. She is the top returnee in the 400m dash for the 3A classification and is coached by David Blue.
"Yvonna is a solid addition to our 400m crew," said Hall. "With returning teammates, the addition of Ebonie Cunningham and other future possible additions in the spring signing period, our women's 4x400m relay teams have many memorable relay experiences in their future,"
Nicole Quaqliana placed 8th in the New Jersey Meet of Champions last spring in the 800m running for Mount Olive High in Flander, N.J. Nicole ran a time 2:15.05 at the meet. Nicole's focus has been on soccer over the past couple of years and will turn more of her focus to exploring her potential in track this spring. Nicole will also compete in cross country for the 49ers. She is coached at Mount Olive by Vanessa Lewis.
"Nicole will bring a great enthusiasm and competitiveness to the team in the fall," said distance and cross country coach Brad Herbster. "She has a great desire to compete at this level and we really look forward to having her here at Charlotte."
Darius Law is another Southeast Raleigh product. He burst on to the scene last spring, placing 5th in the North Carolina state meet in 2006 in the 400m dash with a time of 48.73. Darius is one of the top returning 400m sprinters in North Carolina and will be a strong contender for the 2007 state title, according to the Charlotte coaches.
The 49ers, defending Men's and Women's Atlantic 10 Champions, open the 2006-07 season with two concurrent meets: the Clemson Invitational Dec. 1-2, 2006, in Clemson, SC and the Appalachian State Invitational Dec. 2 in Boone, NC.
